Engraved portrait of a man in 18th-century costume holding a brush and an easel. Printed text at the bottom: 'Son of the Avignon painter Antoine Vernet, father of Carle Vernet and grandfather of Horace Vernet. Was mainly a painter of landscapes and seascapes. The Marquis de Marigny commissioned a series of paintings of French ports; fifteen were executed. The Louvre holds part of them, as well as landscapes, in total about forty paintings.'
