View of Fort de Vaux, built between 1881 and 1884 using rubble masonry and covered with concrete from 1888. The reverse indicates that it was captured by the Germans on June 8–9, 1916, despite the heroic resistance of Commander Raynal, and then recaptured by Mangin's army on November 2, 1916. The postmark 'OSSUAIRE de DOUAI (Meuse)' is visible.
