View of the Porte d'Aix in Marseille, with a monumental arch adorned with sculptures and the inscription 'A LA RÉPUBLIQUE MARSEILLAISE'. The scene shows pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages in a lively square. On the reverse, a handwritten correspondence addressed to Monsieur Auguste Bouvard, head of the gendarmes in Bâtie, Algeria, with a 5-centime green stamp and a 'Marseille' cancellation.
