View from the forest of the medieval ruins of the Great Wall at Provins, dating from the 13th century, with a path bordered by bare trees. The reverse features handwritten text describing the sentinels who guarded the top of the walls to monitor the approach of the enemy, from a breach made by a war jaw called 'chat'.
