Description

Commemorative statue of Sergeant Richard Kirkland, soldier of the 2nd Company, 2nd Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers, who died in December 1862 during the Battle of Fredericksburg. The work, by sculptor Felix Welden, depicts his act of compassion toward wounded Union and Confederate soldiers. Reverse: explanatory text, USA 21¢ postmark, Fredericksburg cancellation of 16 August 1962, and handwritten address to Melle Lierin in Melun, France.
