Description

Interior view of the Hôtel-Dieu in Tonnerre, highlighting a stone astronomical gnomon engraved in the center of the paved floor. The printed text explains that this instrument, built in 1785, indicates the mean noon time by the position of a sunbeam passing through a hole in the wall. The reverse has handwritten text dated August 1952, addressed to Alexandrina Chavelpoir at the road des Alpes, in Provence.
