Description

American postal envelope dated August 1862, franked with a 5-cent green stamp depicting Lincoln, with a circular postmark from Philadelphia. Handwritten address to John Anthony Clayton in Delaware. Front side bears the inscription 'Return to Sempel & Co., No. 17 South Water Street, Philadelphia' and a note for return if not delivered within 10 days. Back side shows handwritten text indicating 'Cyrus Reed' and 'Return Post Office' with a partial date '1862'.
